I asked Dylan to snap this photo before our daily walk. I almost didn’t ask because I looked a mess as it was first thing in the morning before getting ready for the day. I decided that didn’t matter because I want Beau to look back and see the overwhelming happiness he brought us. Boy, am I glad I did.
For starters, happiness is beautiful. On everyone. It radiates beauty both inside and out. Everyone’s happiness looks different, mine is loud and energetic. Dylan’s is sweet and serene. What matters is it’s there. What I see in this picture is the joy on my baby’s face and the overwhelming love on mine. It’s not a perfect Instagram photo but it perfectly reflects my heart.
Happiness is the secret to all beauty. There is no beauty without happiness.

Not only are pictures meant to capture beauty, but also to preserve moments in time. The moments I want to preserve are the every day ones. Of course special occasions are exciting, but the small, quiet moments weave the fabric of our lives. The little Beau moments: cooing up from his changing table telling us his big bear tales, exuberantly flailing his arms after hearing the the colorful plush owls’ soft tinkle when kicking around on the play mat, scrunching up his face and piranha biting down when milk isn’t flowing fast enough. These are the moments I will miss most when we move into the next season of our lives.
Ultimately, I am so glad I asked Dylan to take this photo; it has ended up being one of my favorites so far. A smile creeps onto my face every time I look at it. The lesson I learned from this is that anytime I’m looking less than my best but filled with happiness
